Battery Backup

Home battery backup and storage in Lynchburg, Virginia

Keep the lights on when the grid goes down, and use more of the solar power you make. We install home batteries across Lynchburg and central Virginia.

Why add a battery

What a battery does that solar panels cannot

Solar panels only produce while the sun is up. Most grid-tied systems also switch off when the grid does, so line workers are not hurt by power flowing back down the wires. A battery fixes both. It stores what your panels make, then runs your home at night and through an outage.

Earth Right is a battery backup installer based at 52 Beechwood Drive in Lynchburg, serving homes across central Virginia.

Why add a battery

Backup you can rely on

Tesla Powerwall 3

Whole-home backup protection

Powerwall is a wall-mounted AC battery built around a rechargeable lithium-ion pack. It stores solar energy for use after dark, shifts your power use toward cheaper hours and backs up your home when the grid fails. Powerwall 3 has a solar inverter built in.

It connects to your home through a single, simple interface, and its compact size makes it easy to place in a garage or on an exterior wall.

We install several battery brands. Tesla is one of them, and Earth Right is a Tesla Powerwall Premier Certified Installer.

What stays powered when the grid goes down
During an outage

What stays powered when the grid goes down

The honest answer is that it depends on how the battery is set up and how much you ask of it. These are the usual groups.

Usually easy to cover

  • Lights
  • Refrigerator and freezer
  • Wi-Fi router and phone chargers
  • Garage door opener

Takes planning

  • Central air conditioning
  • Electric range, oven and dryer
  • A well pump
  • EV charging

How long the battery lasts depends on how much power you draw. Run fewer large loads and it lasts longer. We go through which circuits to back up before anything is installed.

Getting the size right

How a battery gets sized

Sizing starts with a question: what do you want to keep running, and for how long? From there it comes down to a few inputs.

Using less power means you need less battery. That is why we often look at energy efficiency first, since a tighter home can mean a smaller, cheaper battery.

One battery or several

More battery capacity gives you more backup time or more loads at once. The right number comes from your assessment, not a rule of thumb.

Already have panels?

Pairing a battery with existing solar

In many cases a battery can be added to a solar system you already have. How simple that is depends on your inverter, your electrical panel and how the system was wired.

We check all three during the assessment, then tell you plainly what works and what it would take.

Starting from scratch instead? See residential solar. Running a business? See commercial solar with battery storage.

Lower bills

Electricity bill savings

Powerwall decides when to store energy and when to use it. It looks at how you use power, the weather forecast and your rate plan, and adjusts without you touching anything.

Where your utility charges more at certain times of day, it can shift your use away from the expensive hours. A built-in solar inverter also helps it capture more of what your panels produce.

Beyond the house

One integrated ecosystem

Powerwall can charge an electric vehicle from surplus solar instead of the grid, and it can keep charging when the grid is down.

With a Powershare-enabled EV, the car can also feed power back to the house through Powerwall and stretch your backup time during an outage.
