The numbers

Financial Benefits

Commercial solar can pay for itself faster than you think.

Utility Savings

Lower monthly electricity bills once the system is switched on.

ROI and payback

Typical commercial systems pay for themselves in 5 to 8 years. Your own figure depends on the inputs below.

Tax incentives

Section 48E remains available for commercial systems through 2027. Details are further down this page.

The numbers

Depreciation

A business buyer thinks about how an asset is treated on the books, not only what it saves on the bill. A commercial solar system is a business asset, and its cost is generally recovered through depreciation on a schedule set by tax rules.

That schedule interacts with the tax credit, because claiming the credit can change the amount you are allowed to depreciate. The exact schedule depends on your business and on the year the system goes into service.

Earth Right is not a tax adviser. We can set out how the mechanisms work. The numbers come from your own accountant.

Federal incentive

The commercial tax credit

Section 48E remains available for commercial systems through 2027. That is different from the residential position, where the Section 25D credit expired on December 31, 2025. If you have heard that the solar credit is gone, that is true for homeowners and not for businesses.

Only the owner can claim it

A business that buys the system outright is the owner and can claim the credit. Under a lease or a power purchase agreement, the provider owns the system and claims it.

Confirm your own eligibility with your accountant before you decide.

Your payback

What sets your ROI and payback

No two buildings pay back at the same pace. These inputs decide yours.

What sets your ROI and payback
  • The commercial rate your business pays for power
  • Demand charges on your utility bill
  • Your consumption profile across the day
  • Available roof or ground area
  • Whether you own or lease the building

Own or lease? Settle it early.

Building ownership is the first question that can stop a commercial solar project. If you lease, talk to your landlord before anything else.

Before you commit

Project timeline

Commercial projects take longer than residential ones. These are the stages, in order.

01

Site Assessment

We walk the property and review your energy use.

02

Design

We size the system to your building and goals.

03

Permitting

We prepare and submit the permits your jurisdiction requires.

04

Interconnection with the utility

The utility has to approve the connection before the system can run.

05

Installation

Crews install the system. Time on site depends on its size and the complexity of the roof or site.

06

Commissioning

The system is inspected, tested and switched on once the utility gives permission to operate.

Questions

Common questions about commercial solar

How much does a commercial solar system cost?

The cost of a commercial solar system depends on your building size, energy needs, and the type of system you choose. We provide a free assessment to determine the best solution for your business and give a detailed, transparent estimate. Many businesses also take advantage of federal tax credits, incentives, and financing options to lower upfront costs.

Will solar panels work in winter or cloudy conditions?

Yes. Solar panels generate energy whenever sunlight is available, even on cloudy days. While output may be lower than on bright, sunny days, panels still produce electricity year-round, including during winter months. Proper system design ensures your business receives reliable energy in all conditions.

How long does installation take?

Installation typically takes one to two weeks, depending on the size of the system and the complexity of your roof or property. Before installation begins, we complete a site assessment and create a schedule to minimize disruption to your operations.

Do you handle permits and inspections?

Yes. We manage all permits, approvals, and inspections required for your commercial solar system. Our team ensures your project meets local codes and utility requirements, so you can focus on running your business while we handle the details.
